I have always been artistic, even from a young age I would sit and draw for hours. My parents noticed this and encouraged me. They told me throughout school to aim to get a job that I enjoyed. Well, for me that was going to be Art & design.
I applied for Art College when I left school & got my degree in printed textiles at Duncan of Jordanstone, University of Dundee. I chose printed Textiles as it allowed me to use my skills in painting and illustration, but having the excitement of seeing it come to life on a fabric & end product was the cherry on the cake. The final part of the course was taking part in New Designer down in London, where showcased my degree show project, &I landed my first Job. In 2 weeks I had moved from Fife in Scotland to Manchester.
My time within in house studios ranges from greetings & cards to Wall Art & Wallpaper, before my last in house role in a home textiles studio for bedding. I enjoyed my time within each of these studios, each step has been a massive growth period where I learned so many skills from being around other designers and being taught about the specifics of a product. I got to a point that I knew I had the skills and the confidence to pursue my own venture. I felt it was time to step away from the client briefs & create something I believed in. The freedom I have felt for doing this has been a massive unclipping of the wings for me.
I have so much energy & passion for what I do, I wanted to be able to share my true creativity with the world. Nature has always been a massive influence of mine, and I have always been a lover of fairy tales & folklore, which I think reflects in my work, adding little nuances of this into my designs.I always start with a simple sketch or drawing. I love inks and watercolour, they are my go to mediums and by using my own artwork, this allows me to keep a unique style to my work. I also have a keen eye for trends - keeping an eye out on the latest catwalk shows and combining that with what you are being inspired by. It could be the colours, it could be the style of artwork, it could be a particular era of time. Keeping things fresh is all about new combinations, and thats what makes it exciting!
Having just launched in 2018, I am just back from my first trade event down at Top Drawer, where I debuted my first Avalana Collection. This collection is heavily inspired by a trip I took to Costa Rica. The places I visited while there were just incredible, the landscapes and animals and all the beautiful forms within the rainforest blew me away. When I returned home I wanted to extend my experience, what better way than to put it all down into art, allowing me to share it with the world.
Avalana is for those looking for something truly special, & with an eye for design.. The mission - to create truly stunning designs for the home and gift, that each tell a unique story; prints & patterns that draw inspiration from travels, folklore & nature.
Each collection is lovingly created through imaginative vigour. Individual designs start life as a sketch or painting that is carefully curated using digital methods. Avalana is proud to offer an array of products from luxury velvet cushions and silk scarves, to beautiful gift items and bespoke art prints; all made in the UK.
