A poignant ancestral painting transformed into a wall mural.
Number 18 is a 1914 still-life oil painting created by Woodchip & Magnolia founder Nina Marika Tarnowski’s ancestor Ernest Walker the year he went to serve in the Great War.
He never came back.
Nina said: “A key trend for 2020 is going to be about finding soothing familiarity in bygone eras so expect inspiration from the past, re-imagined for uncertain times.
“This painting was left to me by my Grandfather and I have always cherished it. It has a comforting feel to it, and I always wanted to explore the option of turning it into a wallcovering, as a tribute to my ancestor and all those like him who went off to serve and never returned.”
The painting, by Ernest, who was Nina’s Grandmother’s brother, will be made available as a wall-mural in early 2020. The name “Number 18” comes from the catalogue number on the back of the painting.
Nina added: “The name Number 18, makes me think of the men with no name in unmarked graves who didn’t return from the Great War.”
