Decor ideas for east and west facing rooms

East or west, your room follows the sun’s daily rhythm, shifting in light and mood as the hours pass. That’s what gives these spaces their charm…and why they can be a little tricky to get just right.

An east-facing room greets the day with soft morning light before gently dimming by afternoon. A west-facing space does the opposite - starting slower, then warming up beautifully as the sun sets. Different patterns, same golden rule: always try before you buy. Swatch it, watch it and see how it plays on every wall.

Before ordering samples, think about when your room is used most. A west-facing bedroom, for example, will feel darker in the morning, so lighter, brighter shades can help lift it. The aim is to find colours that feel balanced - working just as well in bright sunlight as they do when the light fades.

East-facing rooms
These spaces enjoy a soft, warm glow early on, but the light quickly brightens and can wash colours out. Crisp whites may feel too stark in the morning and a little cold later on. Instead, choose hues with a touch of warmth - yellow-based greens or neutrals with a pink undertone rather than grey. If you’re drawn to bolder shades, this light can handle it beautifully.

West-facing rooms
These rooms stay more muted through the day before coming alive with a rich, golden evening light. Because of that, warmer tones - pinks, reds, and earthy shades - can help create a welcoming feel from the start and glow even more at sunset. Prefer something more balanced? Cooler tones will soften that late-day warmth.

There’s no strict right or wrong here - it’s all about how your space is used and how the light moves through it. Follow that, and you’ll land on a scheme that feels just right from morning through to evening.
